How do you discipline you children?
Views so far:
Depends on what you mean by “light”. Some forceful discipline may be ok, but very carefully not to break their spirit.
These deliberately simplified arguments are something many parents battle with daily. Most give themselves a permission to – occasionally – mete out physical discipline, and definitely don’t hold back on yelling, when appropriate.
Meanwhile, a growing number of countries BAN spanking altogether. What do parents think about THAT? Most agree that it’s bad to spank, but… sometimes things still manage to get out of hand. So what’s the solution? And here, I mean not merely for the sake of the children, but also for the adults?
Personally, I’ve come to embrace a libertarian view on child upbringing, but specifically the way Stefan Molyneux explains it. Libertarianism is ALL about NON-AGGRESSION and property rights. So, if you resonate with these two basic and moral principles, why wouldn’t you want to extend them to your children?
Molyneux argues – very convincingly, I might add – that NEGOTIATING with your child is not merely good for the child (teaching it negotiating and thinking skills), but also good for the parent. Sure, it might at first appear to be slower and more exhausting after a busy day at work… but the benefits are nothing short of profound.
A child brought up with NO aggression can not help but grow up smarter, brighter, better prepared for life – and with an infinitely stronger moral backbone. A child like that multiplied by a couple of billion means a COMPLETELY different world of tomorrow!
After all, while we teach our kids that hitting is wrong – we’re contradicting ourselves when we spank THEM. When we teach them that coercion and force are immoral – our government contradicts this by its law enforcement and its wars.
I have absolutely no doubt that this is the RIGHT way to look at this problem. Spanking and abusive yelling at your kids should NOT be part of your child-raising toolbox. If it has been – apologize to your kids and vow never to do it again!
Oh yes nothing gives me more satisfaction than knowing i can at least kick someones ass!
